Texans Still Searching for Stability in Backfield as Joe Mixon Remains Sidelined

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio said there remains “no timetable” for running back Joe Mixon’s return from a foot injury, leaving uncertainty around the team’s rushing attack as it enters its bye week.

Mixon, who signed with Houston in 2024 after seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, has not played this year while recovering from the offseason injury. Caserio told reporters that Mixon is still rehabbing and that the team will continue to monitor his status.

“Joe’s working,” Caserio said. “We’re not going to put a date on it.”

Mixon’s absence has been felt in Houston’s offense. The 29-year-old led the Texans last season with 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns, providing the kind of power and consistency that helped balance the passing game led by C.J. Stroud.

Through five games in 2025, Houston ranks 23rd in the NFL in rushing offense, averaging 83.6 yards per game and 3.4 yards per carry, according to league statistics. Veteran Nick Chubb has been the team’s most productive option with 227 yards and two touchdowns, while rookie Woody Marks has added spark in limited carries. Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale have rotated situational snaps in short-yardage and third-down roles.

The Texans’ rushing attack showed signs of life in last week’s 44–10 win over the Baltimore Ravens, producing a season-high 167 rushing yards behind an improved offensive line effort.

Caserio said Mixon’s recovery remains the team’s priority but emphasized patience as the Texans prepare for the second half of the season.

“When he’s ready, we’ll know,” Caserio said.

Houston (3-2) enters its bye week before returning to action in Week 7.
