Wussow Park Provides Unrivaled Recreation Experience
Welcome to Wussow Park! Located between Greens Road and the Greens Bayou, this North
Houston District fixture serves residents with multiple amenities.
The park is named after Thomas Wussow, one of the district founders. Wussow serves as the
flagship park for North Houston with a rich history and plenty of funding for improvements and
additions.
North Houston's District held public input sessions regarding changes or possible additions and
received active feedback from the community. Wanted expansions included playgrounds,
increased fitness opportunities, more lighting, and residents also wished for the park to be
greener.
“The hope is for Wussow Park to be a location that the folks in the community can visit and
enjoy the outdoors. We can also offer amenities that people may not have at their neighborhood
apartment complex.” Said Robert Fiederlein. Fiederlein has served as the VP of planning and
infrastructure for the North Houston District for three years.
Texas Parks and Wildlife have a dollar-for-dollar deal with North Houston that will match every
dollar spent by the park. This advantage allowed Wussow Park to expand in many desired areas.
One playground area has a unique natural look with molded rocks and artificial timber for
climbing, even featuring a tree house. Wussow park also has three more nearby playgrounds,
complete with equipment appropriate for children of any age.
Areas for adults include the six-mile family friendly walking trail partly protected from the sun
by the parks surrounding tree canopy. An adult fitness area sits nearby, housing eight blue
outdoor workout machines all SPF protected by a matching blue shade stretched overhead.
“Thousands of people visit the park weekly. Stop by on a weekend and you'll see kids playing on
the playground, teenagers and adults playing on the soccer fields, and people exercising.”
Fiederlein stated.
A wealth of benches and tables are spread out across Wussow Park offering numerous places to
rest or enjoy a meal. Soccer spectators can utilize the surrounding picnic tables to enjoy a game.
The park is also an excellent destination for multiple sports lovers. Check out the nearby North
Houston skate park or play some soccer on Wussow's two soccer fields complete with goals and
regulation lines.
Wussow also had a vibrantly orange mini-soccer pitch installed in 2024. Doubling as a pickleball
court, Houston's own pro soccer team the Dynamo partnered with Wussow to provide the
equipment for the small, fenced sports field.
“With the North Houston District, we're focused on trying to make the district safe, accessible,
and appealing to both businesses and residents living in the area.” Fiederlein said. A major goal
for the park is serving the area residents who then help to support the surrounding local
businesses.
Not all expansions were exclusively for the public; environmental considerations were also
implemented. Three major plantings added increased vegetation, a new pollinator garden, and a
converted drainage ravine turned into a bio-swale that houses native water-loving plants.
Also added was a small coastal prairie featuring colorful fragrant flowers and tall wild green
grasses. A throwback to the 1800’s, the prairie area resembles how a pre-settled Houston looked
over 200 years ago.

concluded.
